2000, My uncle who was an avid gun collector, was showing me his two pistols (mis matched set), Marlin 1894 and a double barrel shotgun. I asked why they were a set. He told me he got them so he could participate in cowboy action shooting. However his eyesight had worsened and he could not join. After an explanation of was CAS was, I purchased the set. A few days later I located the closest club and called the person in charge, Doc Bonecutter. His friendliness and time spent explaining most everything persuaded me to attend their next shoot. It was May of 2000. All went well as far as me not shooting anyone but some of the targets went unmolested. OK, a lot of the targets.
My second shoot resulted in my old side by side’s stock breaking in half, I panicked some thinking I was done when Doc Bonecutter took my broken shotgun and handed me his Winchester 1897 pump. Since that day I have never shot any other shotgun in CAS except a Winchester 1897.
At a later shoot I noticed a small covered wagon gun cart with lots of badges, pins, and awards on it. The name on it was “Coyote Cap Gun Works” and he was a gunsmith. I met him and we talked, I could tell he knew a lot about CAS guns, especially 1897’s. I asked if he would set my 1897 up for CAS. He did and if I had been blind folded and worked the action I would not have said it was the one I gave him to work on. It turned out that we became very close friends and he became my tutor and taught me so much about the 1897.
We traveled between Wisconsin and Minnesota for the next 20 years spending a few days or a week at a time learning and working on 1897’s. There was so much information, explanations, and all with hands on solutions. I was taught by the best 1897 gun smith, period. I do all work required to get your 97 running as smooth as possible or I can set it up so it is in safe and proper condition if you want to shoot other venues.
I also set them up for ladies and youth shooters. These two groups require different set ups than those used by the big ole rough cowboys. Contact me for more information. I offer over 25 years of CAS firearms and the last 20 years of specializing only on the 1897’s. I offer CAS set up, shorten barrels, action work, trench conversion, making them safe and proper, restoration, and refinishing.
I stock all of the parts required for the Winchester 1897. I also have the only complete parts inventory for the Norinco/IAC 1897’s.
